Being Assertive.

I'm not really one for confrontation. I get on well with pretty much everyone I meet and I don't really like getting into conflict. But that doesn't mean that I let people walk all over me. I like to be able to see the best in people, but the reality is that while all of us are in possession of good and bad traits, sometimes some people seem to use more of their bad traits then they do of their good traits, and in times when you come across people like this it is important that you can stay assertive and stick up for yourself.

I've had to do this a few times today. I wasn't rude to the people, but I didn't let them take me for a fool either. I was in a shop that I wont name, trying to get my laptop sorted otu (I've been having some problems with my charger) and basically since I bought the laptop less than 21 days ago they are supposed to give me a replacement laptop, which they wernt doing. After a few phone calls from my father (who I have to admit was rather more irate at them than I was, I was being rather more placid) they eventually gave us what we asked for, and I'm sat here typing to you now on a new netbook.

Later on today I encountered another problem, an older man got on the bus and came and sat opposite me, I then noticed that he was blatently staring at me which I have to admit was making me feel rather uneasy. I treid to ignore him at first, I turned my music up and looked out of the window, but all the time I could feel his eyes on me, and to be perfectly honest as well as making me feel uneasy I was also becoming slightly annoyed because what right does he have to stare at me? Yes I am female, yes I do have a body and certain parts and no I'm not willing to share it with him, I do not dress before I go out with the intention of catching attention, I dress in pretty clothes because I like to wear pretty clothes, not so that creepy old guys can stare at me on a bus. Anyway, eventually I turned to him and (im not normally this nasty to people but thers just something I hate so much about being stared at, especially by old men) said "What the hell are you looking at?" Now I don't know whether the guy thought I was mute or what but he certainly didn't expect me to speak I dont think, and I shocked him out of staring at me, after I'd said that he diverted his attention out of the window and not at me.

Usually I'm pretty shy, so I'm glad I was able to do that, it does make me feel good sometimes to know that I can be assertive and I don't always have to do what other people tell me to do just because they tell me to do it, the thing is is that I am also human just as they are, they aren't any higher up than me even if they are older, I love being polite and getting on with people, but if I really do believe that something is wrong, then I'm happy to say I'm not afraid to say it. We don't have to be rude to people to be assertive (I know I was fairly rude to the man on the bus, but I have slight issues with being stared at, especially when I wasnt doing him any harm or in fact paying him any attention) but we can be assertive without being aggressive and I think thats important to remember, because often people think its two sides of the same coin but it's not.

Remember then, be asserive, you're human too, just like the person you're talking too and there isn't a readon that they have any right to always push you around!

Baby Steps.

Anyone who has ever observed a baby trying to walk for the first time will most probably understand this post and what I am trying to say. When a baby first tries to walk, they have utter concentration, they know what they want. They will take teeny tiny little steps. They will stop and wobble slightly. They will fall and land on the floor and cry maybe. They will get frustrated. Then they will stand up and try again and again and again until they have a grip on it.

Why am I mentioning this then? No i havent gone mad contrary to popular belief. I've mentioned this because sometimes its hard for us to fall down and then stand back up again. As adults we tend to try to run before we can walk. And then we fall with such a force it feels as though we cant ever stand back up again. So I urge you to think like a baby, take tiny little steps to reach your destination, gentle steps, so if you fall you don't hurt yourself so much. And have the determination of a baby, babies dont stop until they do something, they might stop for breath but they never completly give in.

And remember this, falling is not failing, we only fail when we neglect to get back up again. As my pshychology teacher so rightly told me, if you fall off your horse 8 times, you get back on 9.

Being Imaginative and Creative (My LadyBird Circus) :D

Sometimes the simple pleasures in life are the best. I've spent a lot of time outside today, just appreciating everything. The sky and its vibrant shades of blue and candyfloss clouds. The grass and the trees, emerald and waving softly in the breeze. The flowers that smile at you as you pass by. Today in particular, I've spent a lot of time looking at ladybirds, and while I was looking at them something creative popped into my head :)

My Ladybird Circus.
The ring leader is the biggest ladybird I have ever seen in 17 years of life. He was huge (and I have just decided that he is male but I have no idea why I came to that conclusion). He wanders over leaves, watching his workers to ensure they are all getting on ok. His workers are quite scared of him due to his vast size, and the fact that the spots on his back are rather different, most ladybirds have 7 spots, but this one's are all very close together giving the impression that someone has tried to paint a picture straight onto his back and smudged the paint! He is in a position of power here and he knows it, the others are a tad scared of him, but if any of them had problems he would be on side immediately- he takes care of his workers. But for now he watches them, his white eyes moving with every move they make. And his workers are an interesting bunch. There is a tight-rope walker, he walks over the smallest branches scattered on the floor as though they were simply pavement, he never falters, but shows off to an admiring bunch of friends below him. One is black and white instead of red and black, the others shunned him and laughed at him before, but not anymore, now they admire him as much as they do the tightrope walker, he walks upside down along leaves and gravity doesn't seem to work on him, he does it as naturally as if he were the right way up! and he sleeps the wrong way up too, which has earned him the nickname Bat. The remaining performer, I believe was a monkey of sorts in a past life, he jumps off leaves and branches, and flies through the air before landing gracefully onto another leaf or branch on a different plant. Its like watching a dance routine in the air when he flies, he flutters this way and that, and then lands to an appreciative applause and thanks the crowd. Though there are only 3 performers and one master (so it is a very small circus) they had a captivated audience of ladybirds watching them in awe with their children by their side, so the fact that theyr small ended up really being irrellevant as it was still loved by all.

I'm being serious about what all of these ladybirds were doing, obviously I embellished slightly, and added characters to them all and gave them families and made them almost into a little society! But thats the beauty of being able to use my imagination and be creative, suddenly things that before existed without personalities, have them and the world becomes that little bit more magical. I would suggest the use of imagination and creativity for anyone who needs to smile more, and for those who need a little more magic in their life. The stigma on imagination, is that it is a childrens thing, a childrens past time, respectable adults shouldnt use it because its living in fantasys and fairyland, but I say to anyone no matter what your age, thats utter crap, imagination keeps us sane, it lets us believe in a better life than the one we have created, and provides us with an espcape route when we feel we need one. So go out there now, and get your tickets for the ladybord circus, believe me you wont regret it! :D

Winston Churchill- Success is not final. Failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Thought For The Day :)

"The only way to prevail is to hit rock bottom. After all, you need something to push off of to fly high"

This was written on the bio of my aunties facebook page, I have only just read it, isn't it beautiful?

And so true! If you remember nothing else when you hit rock bottom- remember that. I know I write like one of the most optimistic people going, but believe me I don't go around with a constant smile plastered onto my face. I feel pain as much as the next person. In truth, I have contended with an awful lot in almost 17 years of life, and I know I will contend with an awful lot more, and the reason I love this quote so much is because I have hit rock bottom so many times for so many things, but I've never stayed there, like it says, I just needed something to push off from!

Humans seriously underestimate their ability to cope I think. We hear about a situation, sit there and think "I could never cope with that!" but then if we were faced with it, we would do what we have to do to cope with it, and 9 times out of ten, we make it through. (Mentioning 9 times out of 10 just reminded me of something, in a Terry Pratchet book there is a quote which says- Scientists say that there is a 1 in a million chance of a miraculous happening. But magicians have calculated that 1 in a million chances occur 9 times out of 10!) Sorry for the slight diversion! It might seem like you need a miricle to get through a situation, but even if it does- magicians have said that 1 in a million chances (ie a miracle) occur 9 times out of 10!

Seriously though, the people who know my story through ( and I aren't putting it on here it isn't the time or the place) say to me, "I don't know how you managed and still came through the other end!". I have a few things to say to that. Firstly, I aint out the other end yet either, but I do know that there's light there and I aren't stopping until I get to it. It's not easy, nor has it been easy, and nobody ever said it was, but it's possible with perserverence and persistance. And as for how I managed, well the truth is, I don't know that either, I just know that I did, and I did what I have to, and my decisions maybe wern't the best, and they wern't the ones that other people would have chosen, but still they were my decisions all the same, and whether or not they were the bests ones is regardless, because I've ended up in the same place.

Also, don't be scared to ask for help. It might surprise some to know (with my endless amount of clouds with silver linings) that I see a counsellor. I sought help, and they gave it to me, and she makes me feel so much better about a whole range of different things, and she makes it so that I can come on here and chat to all you lovely people about keeping on smiling and keeping on going :D Asking for help is not cowadice, it's intelligence, human beings are not ever meant to be alone creatures.

The expressions about the light at the end of the tunnel, the gold at the end of the rainbow, the clouds having silver linings! they're all true. Every cloud does have a silver lining, we just have to train our eyes to see them. And the light and gold at the end- that refers to a journey, and we have to carry on with the journey, because if we fall we are left with 2 choices, we stay on the floor and nothing changes except we get a little dirtier, or we stand up and brush ourselves off, and continue on our journey until the end and we feel stronger for falling.

Remember this aswell- in order to have a rainbow, we can't just have the sun, we are going to need a bit of rain aswell.

There's thunder and lightening and rain outside, how about we go dance in it? Enjoy :)

Keep Smiling :)

Whheeeey

Where do I start? Its august, which means its 9 days until my birthday :D
I am being so well taken care of here at my grandmas, it's unreal (not that im not normally well taken care of, just that nothing beats being taken care of by a grandparent).
The sun is as bright as I've seen it all year, I can literally feel the vitamin D rushing through me!
My auntie is back :) and she has given us some wonderful anecdotes from her travels.
I'm seeing my brother and sister on friday :D
There's a party on saturday.
I'm seeing my best friend tomorrow.
My aunties friend is a hairdresser, and he's coming to do my hair on thursday, and I always feel really good after having my hair done so I can't wait for that!
I am in such high spirits :) just chilling (well, I have done some psychology work, I can't let my brain go to complete mush now can I?). I actually can't wait to have my hair done, I've been skint so it's been a long time coming, but he's knocked the price down :) Yeeeees. And, because it's being done on thurdays, it will look good for saturday when the partys on! I'm really feeling this.
So excited today :D

Keep Smiling :)
