Smiling
So, smiling is infectious, yes it is.
I Love that thought, yes smiling is infectious. Its wonderful to think that something so simple, something that is so innately ready, can be passed around hundreds of people.
The Science
Smiling is what is classed as a social releaser. Bowlby suggested that these social releasers (which also include crying and the "baby-face"- Big eyes, small nose and big forehead) are used in order so that a child can form attachments and they are innate and evolutionary and persist and survive because of its adaptiveness. So that's the science behind it and science is great and wonderful, but what we miss while looking for science and explanation is the beauty of it.
The Beauty
And now here is the beauty of smiles. Heres the deal- the worlds in a pretty bad state at the minute, recession is everywhere, poverty grips the place, violence, war, mindless killings, racism, child abuse, religious extremists. It's all a bit mad. But when you walk down the street, look people in the eye. Don't look around them or through them, actually look at them, and smile, I garuntee that despite the problems we all have right now, the majority will smile right back at you. And there's nothing in it, it doesn't cost you any money! It takes more muscles for you to frown than it does for you to smile :) and that's reason enough to smile in itself! Smiles can heal the world, one person at a time.
There's always something..
In a world where it seems like there isn't any hope, we have to remember that there is always something. There's always people who will help, people who will give you a hug, a helping hand, a smile. It's easy to believe, given the media hype on this type of story, that things in the whole world are awful and we should't trust anybody because of heightened knife crimes and such things, but its not true. All around us are wonderful, fabulous people. We are all strong and couragous, we are all perfect imperfections, but we aren't all bad, the vast majority of us are good, it's just that good doesn't attract media attention. Someone is always there to help you if you need it, all you have to do is ask. The world is never devoid of hope, because humans can never be devoid of hope- its a survival technique for humans.
One last thought.
And with that, I will leave you with one last thought. It's something I was taught by my psychology teacher. When life goes bad, do we sit there and wallow forever? Or do we stand up, brush off and carry on straight toward the next chapter? Giving up is not an option, we all signed up for this when we were born and our contracts haven't ended yet. So smile, some days are good, some are bad, sure most days are probably bad- the 7 truths of life (your toast will probably land butter side down :P) But then bad days don't (usually) cause muscle paralysis so ergo, you can still SMILE :)
Keep Smiling :)
Love, Tutti-Frutti
